The recent Lunch and Learn session on debates in the classroom and the PALMS framework was a breath of fresh air. It was fantastic to delve into how structured debates can truly enrich our students’ understanding of various subjects. Beyond the acquisition of knowledge, these debates are invaluable for honing essential communication skills that will serve them well in all aspects of life.
One of my key takeaways was the power of the PALMS framework. It’s a simple yet effective tool that encourages students to Pause and collect their thoughts, Acknowledge their emotions, connect with what they’ve Learnt, be Mindful of others, and communicate sensibly. To further support the implementation of the PALMS framework, I suggested creating a visually appealing poster to be displayed throughout the school. This would serve as a constant reminder for both learners and educators, prompting them to reflect on which aspect of PALMS they are utilizing in any given situation. These prompts can facilitate meaningful discussions and provide a clear framework for communication across all year groups.
What I particularly appreciate about this approach is its versatility. Debating and oracy, in general, are incredibly powerful tools. Even the most reserved students often come alive during group debates, engaging with topics they might otherwise avoid. By consistently using these strategies in the classroom, we can create a comfortable and encouraging environment where students feel safe to express their ideas and think creatively. The PALMS framework, with its emphasis on mindful and objective communication, can further enhance these discussions, leading to deeper understanding and more meaningful exchanges.
I’m excited to see how these strategies unfold in our classrooms and the positive impact they will have on our students’ learning and development.
